The Water Utility Resource Management Plan (WURMP) coalition team and project consultants encourage local residents to join a WURMP member focus group meeting on Wed., Sept. 20 to learn about the coalition’s work to date to develop a plan for securing a resilient water future for Moab, Grand County, and Spanish Valley.
During this meeting, the group will discuss the WURMP project scope, current project status and data collected so far, and discuss identified alternatives for potential future water sources and their
associated costs. During this meeting, coalition focus group members will provide feedback to the consultants and the project team, and the group will also take input from the community as time allows.
Background
Water service in the Moab area is provided by the City of Moab (Moab), the Grand Water & Sewer Service Agency (GWSSA), and the San Juan Spanish Valley Special Service District (SJVSSD). To address concerns about population and tourism growth, as well as the impacts of climate and drought, Moab City, GWSSA, and SJVSSD are collaborating to study long-term water infrastructure, explore potential alternative sources and solutions, and develop policy recommendations for future planning.
The project scope includes inventories of existing water sources, storage, and distribution systems; evaluation of the agencies’ current water rights; projections of future water demand; and evaluation of alternative future water infrastructure to support anticipated needs. The project scope does not address private water rights or sources.
The work of the Coalition will be accomplished by preparing and implementing a coordinated Water Utility Resource Management Plan. The completed plan will assist these public water agencies in implementing policies intended to ensure resilient water resource supply and management for residents, visitors, and businesses for the next 100 years.
