[ARCHIVED] Streetlight conversion demonstrations set up on Moab’s east and west sides

As part of the City of Moab’s proposed Streetlight Conversion Project, which would replace all streetlights in city limits with dark sky-compliant LED fixtures, demonstration lighting has been installed at six total locations on Moab’s east and west side.

On Thursday, Feb. 17, Rocky Mountain Power, at the request of the City, installed the new LED lights so that community members can see how the new lighting will look on “local” streets in residential neighborhoods, on “collector streets” – side streets that receive higher volumes of traffic, and “major streets” such as Main Street. These light levels were calculated for the different street types based on traffic counts and internationally recognized standards set by the Illumination Engineering Society.

"Converting City streetlights to Dark Sky compliant LED fixtures will improve our street safety, keep light pollution out of our skies, and conserve electricity and maintenance costs," said Mila Dunbar-Irwin, City of Moab sustainability director. "The City is taking the first steps to become compliant with our lighting ordinance adopted in 2019 to support the preservation of our dark skies while not compromising on lighting safety and efficiency in town."

The Moab City Council approved a Dark Skies ordinance in 2019, marking a key component of commitment to better, more efficient lighting. The most important aspect of effective lighting is light where it’s needed, and none where it’s not, Dunbar-Irwin said.

Community members are encouraged to stop by the sample light locations and then share their thoughts with the City via a survey at bit.ly/MoabStreetlights or through the link at moabcity.org/StreetlightConversion. Information boards are located at each light pole, and a QR code for easy access to the website is included on the information boards. A map showing the location sites is also included on the website along with a searchable City map that allows residents to find the locations and types of streetlights located in their specific neighborhoods.
