Moab and Spanish Valley Region – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and local stakeholders, including Grand County, San Juan County, the City of Moab, and the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA), are seeking public input on the future transportation priorities for the Moab and Spanish Valley region through a community survey that’s open now. The work will result in a regional plan that anticipates future growth and transportation needs, boosts economic development opportunities, and enhances the quality of life for residents.
“The goal is to provide a holistic, long-term transportation vision for the region and serve as a guiding document for improvements to local, regional, and state roads and multimodal transportation,” said UDOT Region Four Planning Manager Jeff Sanders, who represents UDOT in this endeavor.
The Moab and Spanish Valley Regional Transportation Plan will be tailored to serve residents, visitors, and those transporting goods throughout the region. The survey itself will help the project team determine community priorities.
”The project partners have done our best to identify the values and goals of the community and to understand the transportation challenges so that we can recommend smart solutions,” Sanders added. “Consulting with the public and collecting their feedback is critical in helping us make decisions that reflect the needs and preferences of the community.”
The desire for a regional plan in the area grew from multiple agencies recognizing that solutions to maintaining and improving quality of life, economic success, and mobility in the wider region will require regional collaboration.
“As the area’s full-time population grows, and visitor tourism success continues, the growing travel demand will pose significant challenges to the transportation system. It will also continue to affect the community’s character, quality of life, and visitor experience.” Sanders said.
