[ARCHIVED] MRAC POOL TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY FOR REPAIRS

Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center Indoor Pool

The indoor pool at Moab Recreation & Aquatic Center (MRAC) will be closed for approximately three weeks beginning on Feb. 6 while repairs are made to the pool floor that will require draining the pool. The sand in the facility’s sand filters will also be replaced and other maintenance tasks will be completed throughout the MRAC during this time.

“The lane and target marker tape on the bottom and shallow end of the pool consisted of apparently defective material used during installation and have since bubbled up and separated, creating a trip hazard. The tape cannot be removed as it is chemically bonded to the membrane covering the pool bottom, so it will be cut out and replaced with tile. In addition, there are some pinholes in the actual pool membrane which need to be repaired,” said MRAC Director Terry Lewis. “We anticipate being able to drain, repair and refill the pool inside of three weeks, opening back up at the beginning of March.”

The rest of the MRAC facility will remain open while the pool repairs and other work are completed. Fitness center hours and classes will run according to the regular schedule and showers will be available.

To compensate patrons, all aquatic and inclusive memberships that are active as of the time of the pool closure will be extended for a time equal to the length of the closure, Lewis said. In addition, some fitness classes will be offered in lieu of certain water aerobics classes. These classes will be available to regular water aerobics attendees only. Class punch passes, SilverSneakers, Silver & Fit and AARP Medicare Supplement passes will be accepted.

“We recognize that this will have a considerable impact upon our users and hope that the extension of their aquatic memberships and offering of our other services will help to lessen the sting,” Lewis said. “We appreciate everyone's forbearance. We all want to keep our community's facility in optimum condition.”

Progress reports on the project will be posted on the MRAC Facebook page (facebook.com/MoabRAC) and the City of Moab website (www.moabcity.org). For more information, or for questions regarding the pool closure, contact MRAC staff at 435-259-8226 or via email at tlewis@moabcity.org.
